Armed Suicidal Subject Taken Into Custody

ARMED SUICIDAL SUSPECT TAKEN INTO PROTECTIVE CUSTODY

On Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at approximately 5:48pm, officers of the Kiel Police Department responded to a 911 call from a woman reporting that her husband was arming himself with a firearm and threatening suicide inside of their home in the 700 block of Milwaukee Street in Kiel,.

Upon arrival, responding officers began to set up a safety zone and containment perimeter however in the process of doing this, the subject of the call contacted the dispatch center himself and soon after surrendered to police officers on scene. The 29 year old man from Kiel was taken into protective custody without incident. A 12 gauge shotgun was located in the home, but no citizens or officers were injured during the incident.

The man was transported by officers from the Kiel Police Department to a mental health facility for evaluation. The Kiel Police Department will also be referring misdemeanor charges of Disorderly Conduct and Battery, both related to a Domestic Violence incident that had occurred at the home which prompted the 911 call. Additional charges are possible, but at this time have not been determined.

Our police department is not naming the defendant at this time due to privacy concerns related to his possible mental health condition.

Although this was a tense and potentially volatile situation for citizens in the immediate area, I am proud to state that both our officers and the supporting officers from the New Holstein police department and the dispatch staff who responded to the initial call did so in a very professional manner thus allowing for a quick and safe resolution of a potentially dangerous situation.

If you require any additional information, please contact me directly to discuss.

Thank you.
