Barricaded Suspect Taken Into Custody

On Saturday 12-01-07 at approximately 1811 hours, Officers of the Kiel Police Department responded to a domestic violence call in the 700 block of Milwaukee Street in Kiel.  When officers arrived on scene and attempted to investigate, they found the male suspect, Shane L. Henkel, age 28, of Kiel, had barricaded himself in the basement of the home and refused to cooperate with officers.  As Kiel officers attempted to negotiate with Henkel, he made threats to shoot police officers.  With the assistance of other law enforcement agencies, Kiel Police set up a perimeter around the home and officers eventually deployed pepper spray into the basement area of the home.  Henkel succumbed to the pepper spray, quickly surrendered, and was taken into custody without incident and was then transported to the Manitowoc County Jail where he is being held on recommended charges of misdemeanor disorderly conduct, damage to property, and resisting arrest.  During the incident, Kiel Police were assisted by officers from the New Holstein Police Department and deputies from the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Department, Calumet County Sheriff's Department, and the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department.
